Tragedy struck the following season, when the plane carrying the team home from a European Cup match crashed on landing in Munich, Germany, to refuel. The tragedy of Munich on February 6, 1958 that claimed the lives of eight team players - Geoff Bent, Roger Byrne, Eddie Colman, Duncan Edwards, Mark Jones, David Pegg, Tommy Taylor and Liam "Billy" Whelan - and 15 other passengers, including some United staff, Walter Crickmer, Bert Whalley and Tom Curry.
